Discussion about Cherrelle - High Priority
Moronydit
CLASSIC Jam & Lewis - this was a foreshadowing of a lot of their later, more well known work with Janet, Michael, Heavy D., New Edition, Human League, etc. (to name a few)... but ironically would be a foreshadowing of their next album with Cherrelle, Affair. On this go around, aside from knocking off three big R&B hits, they set the stage for the content of the next album by brining in long-time friend Alexander O'Neal to duet with Cherrelle on "Saturday Love"... and to pepper his presence all throughout the album with cameo spoken word vignettes... all to develop a rumoured affair between O'Neal and Cherrelle. Jam & Lewis did the same on O'Neal's "Hearsay" album, out shortly after this LP and they featured Cherrelle in a duet on O'Neal's album ("Never Knew Love Like This")... in this process they ended up taking two singers, coupling them together on distinct and separate releases, and fueling a rumoured romance which reached its peak when Cherrelle's next album "Affair" was released... How did it resolve itself? Did the two finally become an 'above the table' pair? Or were they forced to keep their love secret from everyone else? Shlocky marketing gimmick? Hell yes, but with the suave O'Neal and elegant counterpart Cherrelle playing their parts to a "T" it didn't come off as tacky or trite - it worked and sold enough of Cherrelle's "Affair" album to reach platinum.... and to 'retroactively' boost sales of this album, "High Priority" and the "Saturday Love" single both to gold status.
