You must believe in this album! "New old friend" (not a "free improvisation" but a "jazz piano trio" album) is the natural continuation of a very fruitful relationship between Alan Pasqua and Peter Erskine, and their first album under Pasqua's name (after the exuberant "Live at Rocco's" in 2000 and "Badlands" in 2002). Apparently recorded in the span of 1 year (December 2003 - October 2004), the music of Pasqua, his pace, tempo and the quiet atmosphere he achieves to create speaks volumes of his non-alignement with Bop, post-Bop, hard-Bop or whatever BillEvansesque description one might be tempted to attach to it. Here is the concept that prevails. This search for simplicity which is not at odds with complex harmonies and voicings, short but interesting introductions and a full new glance to old tunes.Ask Erskine and his ECM trio with John Taylor and you'll get the answer: this partnership with Pasqua makes them perfect travel companions. Nice trips to "Vienna", "Wichita" and "Barcelona" through the "Highway 14" and a couple of very old classics ("body and soul", "smile", "all the things you are") seen from another perspective.
